MARCH 12, 2023 – Report (2023/03/12)
It was a beautiful March afternoon and many people came to celebrate March 15th – one of the most beautiful and important holidays for Hungarians.
Fewer were present than at the Mardi Gras 3 weeks earlier, but those who did come truly appreciated the fact that there still is an opportunity to celebrate our national heritage and history. It was comforting for the attendees to be able to converse in their native language about a common past and their families. For a many Hungarians, praying for salvation in their native language is important and provides peace of mind. At the commemoration held in the school's dining room, the sometimes soft, sometimes thundering sounds of the Hungarian and American anthems clearly moved every heart, both Hungarian and American.
This year, the focus of the celebration was the two, 200-year anniversaries: the Hungarian National and the birth of the Hungarian poet, Sándor Petőfi.
Participants enjoyed a slide show which included some lesser-known facts regarding Petőfi as well as an essay, written and presented by Father Julius, about Ferenc Kölcsey, the author of the Hungarian national anthem. Selected YouTube video presentations were also included.
We are grateful to Father Julius not only for his pastoral care for the entire Hungarian community, but also for his active role and participation in the planning of this national holiday celebration, including the offering of the Hungarian Mass just prior to this event.
It is also noteworthy that Ede Véssey read his poem written specifically for this occasion. Teenager, Dániel Hartai also read Petőfi Sándor’s poem, “My Mother's Hen.”
Once again, Hungarian housewives excelled as there was no shortages of delightful Hungarian food or pastries!
Thanks to all compatriots and American friends who honored us with their presence and attention as well as those behind-the-scenes volunteers who helped make the event a success!
