Saint Stephen Day in Dallas (2021/08/22)
For over 100 years we have preserved our Hungarian language and culture. Regardless of what part of the World we live in we belong to the Hungarian Nation.
We were all very hopeful that 2021 would bring a return to normal life.
Unfortunately, for the second consecutive year, the COVID-19 virus still keeps people in fear.
As a result, instead of our usual “full house” at our annual celebration, we spent the Sunday afternoon event with significantly fewer friends. Although we were in smaller numbers, there was no shortage of enthusiasm as we celebrated together Prince Géza, (Stephen’s father) and our king Saint Stephen – the founder of Christian Hungary, and the traditional Day of New Bread.
In 2020, it was not possible to commemorate the sad Treaty of Trianon, signed on 4 June 1920. In the second half of the St. Stephen ceremony, we remembered the devastating event in which Hungary was unfairly and completely torn apart by the victors of WWI resulting in millions of Hungarians losing their homeland and subsequently becoming minorities in foreign countries. Five million Hungarians still live all over the world.
Yet we closed the ceremony in a hopeful tone. Even after 100 years, we have still managed to preserve our Hungarian language and culture as we have had to live away from our homeland. Regardless of what part of the World we live in, we still belong to the Hungarian Nation. This atmosphere was reinforced by the beautifully performed music by Sára Aday on clarinet as well as the music video performance of “My Country, my Country.”
